Orchid (from seed)
Orchidaceae spp.
Growing orchids from seed is one of the most challenging and rare horticultural feats. Seeds are dust-like and require sterile lab conditions. A true bucket-list project.

How to Grow
Orchid seeds lack endosperm and need a symbiotic fungus or sterile nutrient agar to germinate. This is typically done in flask culture. Seeds are sown on agar in sterile jars. After 6-12 months, protocorms are transplanted. Most growers buy deflasked seedlings instead.
Growth Phases
Flask Culture (3-6 months)
Seeds germinate on sterile agar medium
Protocorm (3-6 months)
Green blobs form — early orchid stage
Deflasking (6-12 months)
Seedlings moved to community pots
Juvenile (1-3 years)
Leaves and roots develop, plant strengthens
First Bloom (2-4 years)
Mature plant produces its first flower spike
Care Tips
- •Requires sterile laboratory conditions for seed germination
- •Most hobbyists start with deflasked seedlings
- •Patience is critical — years to first bloom
- •Keep humidity high and roots airy
