Morning Glory
Ipomoea purpurea
A fast-growing climbing vine with trumpet-shaped flowers that open fresh each morning. Perfect for fences, trellises, and archways.
easy
Full Sun (6-8 hours)
Moderate — drought tolerant once established
60-90 days to bloom
How to Grow
Nick seeds with a file or soak overnight to break the hard coat. Sow directly after frost, 1cm deep, 15cm apart near a trellis or fence. Vines grow fast — provide support. Thrives in poor soil; too much fertilizer means lots of leaves but few flowers.
Growth Phases
Germination (5-10 days)
Seeds sprout after scarification
Climbing (2-3 weeks)
Vines begin twining and reaching for support
Rapid Growth (3-4 weeks)
Vine can grow 3-4 meters tall
Blooming (8-12 weeks)
Trumpet flowers open fresh every morning
Care Tips
- •Nick or soak seeds before planting for faster germination
- •Don't over-fertilize — poor soil means more flowers
- •Self-seeds freely — can become invasive in warm climates
- •Flowers close by afternoon — enjoy them in the morning
